Statement |
In my opinion, art piece has to make people eyes stop and let them take a look at the piece. If nobody notices that certain piece is sitting there, I don¡¯t think it¡¯s good enough for being a successful art piece. No matter what direction it is, such as minimalism, expressionism, either geometric or organic element of the direction, I think art piece has to have their own attractiveness that can drag people¡¯s attention. Therefore, I try to make new and fresh art pieces. I have to think about the elements that can make artwork standing out and innovative. In design aspect, the epochal composition of the line is the one of the elements. I try to find new composition of lines that nobody has done it before or very rare. Another element that I love to do is interpreting the idea as my own voice. I don¡¯t mind using very comment element such as flower, heart shape, or some idea from the nature. However, the most important thing is that how I am going to digest this idea in to my own flower, my own heart shape or my own idea from any ides. I enjoy this process of finding an idea anywhere around me. It can be a building in a city or nature or even my dream or memory. Another element that can make piece out standing is using right color. Right use of the vivid color can definitely make piece to have attention. However, when I use color, it is very important to consider relation to any other color that used in rest or the area or relation with the design or the composition of lines. I like to use the color in very right place and the right moment. In my piece Lolly Pop, I used powder coating with vivid orange color and I anodized the stem and leaf parts with green. I liked the contrast between green and vivid orange color. For my Coffee table, I chose white color and used pink for the inside of the cone shape for the focal point. I wanted this piece to have unity and little bit of variation. Contrast can be very good element that can make artwork conspicuous, too. In finishing process, contrast between mat finishing and shiny finishing can be very good use for expressing idea clearly. In design aspect, concentrating lots of element together and making rest of area empty is another intensive way to express this contrast thought. In my Pretending to be happy II, I gathered a lot of little flower units in the middle part and separated one flower unit at the one corner. I like to apply humorous idea or make playful artwork, also in order to make artwork fun and interesting. In my Narcissism piece, I got the image of Marline Monroe by Andy Warhol and then transferred that image to the aluminum sheet. I tried to express narcissism by using Marline Monroe image that is a sex symbol and tried to express mirror idea in a humorous way.
Now, I want to emphasize on the permanent artistic value of the art piece. A lot of art pieces that have very fun concept, vivid color or some even successful element that can grab the audience¡¯s attention also often time miss most important aspect of the art, which is timeless beauty. Even though certain pieces are very fresh and new, if it is easy to be sick of after while, that piece is not perfect as an art piece. For me, to find the element of timeless beauty is as important as making piece fresh and creative. It is hard to say that what makes the artwork to have timeless beauty. However, as I thought about the elements of the timeless beauty, it could be the perfect harmony and composition of the lineal quality and color and any other elements. I believe that there is perfect compositional harmony in any kinds of the art pieces, same as in the past, people believed the golden mean. Choosing the right color, texture or scale for the certain pieces decides the perfect harmony of the artwork and leads it to successful piece.
In short, I like to express my
idea in a simple and creative way and I liked to interpret it in my artistic
voice. Overall, I like to see a freshness, simplicity and elegant harmony
in my artwork.
